Class of 1969
Scott Standage,
M.D. was born in
Aptos and attended Aptos Elementary School before entering WHS. Scott was active
in student government and was a member of the swimming and diving team at WHS. As a
senior, he as chosen by fellow students in the "Senior Superlatives" as the male
student with the "Best Personality."
He was selected by area high school administrators to serve in the
capacity of honorary mayor of the city of Watsonville for a
day, in recognition of students who promote good
citizenship.
After graduating from Watsonville High School in 1969, Scott continued
his education at Cabrillo College.
While at Cabrillo College, Scott participated in water polo, swimming,
and diving. Dr. Standage was the
All-League Selection in Varsity Water Polo and also the Most Improved Player on
the Varsity team. Scott was also
the Semi-Finalist in the California State Springboard Diving Championships. Not only did Scott participate in sports
while attending Cabrillo College, he was also a Dean's List student, graduating
in 1971. He continued his
undergraduate studies at University of California, Davis. Scott graduated Magna cum Laude with a
Bachelor of Science in Anthropology in 1973.
After graduation, Scott became the Director of Aquatics at Hartnell
College. In 1975 he became the
swimming, diving, and water polo coach for Cabrillo College. Until the end of 1978 Scott was active
in teaching and coaching aquatics at Aptos High School, Harbor High School,
Soquel High School, and Santa Cruz High
School.
His interest in travel lead him to attend and graduate from International
Tour Management Institute in San Francisco in 1979. He was a Freelance Domestic and
International Tour Director from 1980 through 1983. For three years Scott was the Cruise
Director and Passenger Service Representative for Exploration Cruise Line and
Royal Cruise Line.
Ultimately, he returned to Santa Cruz County to help with the opening of
Chaminade Conference Resort where he served as Director of Operations,
eventually moving on to become General Manager of
Renaissance Meeting Center in Santa
Clara.
Dr. Standage made a major decision at the age of 41. He entered medical
school at Tufts University Medical School in Boston. He decided this would allow
him to attain his goal of teaching and helping people who need him most. During
his training he served as Medical Student Body Council President. At graduation, he was honored with the
Commencement Committee Award for his contributions to the welfare of the medical
school, as well as the Faculty Achievement Award awarded to the graduating
student who has overcome the most adversity.
He completed his internship at the University of Washington and his
residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Stanford
University.
Dr. Standage was formerly associated with Dominican Hospital, as well as
teaching part-time as an attending physician for Stanford University. He
currently works full time at Kaiser Hospital in Santa Clara where he is Director
of the Spine Clinic, as well as the Assistant Chief of the Integrative Medicine
Department. He is board certified
in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
