
Class of 1943

Born in Watsonville in 1925,
Dr. Lloyd Smith is the fourth generation of his family to live in the Pajaro
Valley. He attended local
elementary schools and, following his graduation from
Watsonville High School in 1943, enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps to serve his
country in World War II. In the
military, he studied engineering at Southwestern University and electronics in
Newport, Rhode Island. From 1943 to
1946, he served as a sergeant in the aviation branch of the
U.S. Marine Corps and was assigned to the Marine dive-bomber group in the South
Pacific from 1945 to 1946.
Following World War II, he returned to California to complete his
education. He attended Salinas
Junior College (Hartnell) in 1947 and received an A.A. degree. He continued on to the University of
California at San Francisco and in 1951 graduated from the UCSF College of
Dentistry with B.S. and D.D.S. degrees.
During this time (1948-1951), he also served as a Lieutenant in the
Dental Corps of the U.S. Naval Reserves.
While at the UCSF, he met and married Annette Gilpatric Smith. They have been married for 53 years,
have 4 children, and four grandchildren.
Returning to Watsonville, Dr. Smith began his private practice in 1951.
He continued in Watsonville until his retirement 43 years later in
1994.
Dr. Smith served on the Board of Directors of the Monterey Bay Dental
Society and was a member of the California State Dental Association. He was on the dental staff of
Watsonville Community Hospital, serving as Chairman for three years. He was also Chairman of the Cabrillo
College Dental Assisting Program and Chairman of the coordinating group for the
Watsonville Children's National Dental Health
Week.
Dr. Smith served on the Watsonville Elementary Board of Education, the
Watsonville High School Board of Education, the Santa Cruz County Board of
Education and was the Education Chairman for the Watsonville Chamber of
Commerce. He served in many organizations: Corralitos Padres, SIRS, Lions Club,
Masonic Lodge, Elks Club, P.V. Rod & Gun Club, SCIOTS drill team, March of
Dimes Polio Foundation (after his oldest son contracted Polio) and the Boy
Scouts - he was the first Cub Scout and the youngest Eagle Scout, up to
that time in California. He served
on the Monterey Bay Area Council of Boys Scouts of America for 28
years.
Snow skiing and golf are Dr. Smith's favorite sports. While a student at WHS, he was a member
of the Sno Catz and the golf team and later, as an adult, was a member and
chaperone of the Sno Catz.
Dr.
Smith was named Man of the Year by the Watsonville Junior Chamber of Commerce,
was the recipient of the prestigious Silver Beaver Award, presented to the
Scouts' highest civilian, and also received military honors for his service
during World War II.
The Register-Pajaronian proclaimed his retirement in 1994, an "end of an era."
