Blayne Standage, MD,
FACS was born in
Lincoln, Nebraska, but grew up in Aptos, California. His parents, Harlow and Shirley Standage
still live in Aptos. He is the oldest of 5 children including Scott, Fail
Standage Meehan, Shawn Standage Stern and
Chris.
After
graduating from WHS in 1968, Blayne attended Cabrillo College and UC Davis. There he majored in Zoology and History,
graduating in 1974 ranked #4 of 2000 graduates. He continued his education at Stanford University Medical School receiving his MD in 1980. After marrying the former Gayle Dyer,
they moved to Portland, Oregon so he could do a 6-year residency in surgery at the
Oregon
Health Sciences University. During his residency, he wrote several
grants and did research in cell mediated immunity, which resulted in his first
national presentations and publications.
He was Chief Resident in '85-'86.
Deciding to stay in Portland, he worked at the University as an
Assistant Professor in Trauma and joined a group of surgeons in private
practice.
Dr.
Standage is board certified in surgery by the American Board of Surgery and is
an associate examiner responsible for the oral boards of new surgeons. He is also a member of the American College of Surgeons, the North Pacific
Surgery Association, the Pacific Coast Surgical Society and the Portland
Surgical Society. He is also a
member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons and on
the fundamentals of laparoscopic surgery committee tasked with writing the new
national certifying exam for laparoscopic
surgeons.
Dr. Standage's practice is a blend of private
practice and teaching in the Department of Surgery at Oregon Health Services University. He is president of Oregon Surgical
Consultants PC, a group of surgeons specializing in general, vascular,
laparoscopic and transplant surgery and chairman of the dept. of general and
vascular surgery for Legacy Portland Hospitals, a large multi-hospital health
organization in Portland.
He has a
clinical appointment as an Associate Professor of Surgery and is the on-site
director of the surgical residency at Legacy Good Samaritan. Dr. Standage received 3 Teacher of the
Year Awards and the 2003 Meritorious Achievement in Surgery Award. He has more
than 100 publications primarily in immunology or laparoscopic and vascular
surgery.
Dr.
Standage, an avid skier, raced on a team for the Oregon Cancer Ski Out, placing
4th this season. He
loves to fish, scuba, travel and mountain climb. He has climbed almost every
mountain in the Pacific Northwest and climbed or trekked in Peru, Nepal and Africa. The
high points include Island
Peak in Nepal, just under 21,000 ft., climbing on Mr.
Everest to camp II and he just returned from Tanzania where
he scaled Mt.Kilimanjaro, 19,341 ft.
Dr.
Standage lives in Lake
Oswego, Oregon with his
wife, Gayle and two children, Stephen, 17, and Hayley, 12.
